Did you know?
LILA Online’s mascot, Lila, is a grey jay (Canada jay, camp robber, whiskeyjack)—a famously curious bird native to Labrador and Northern forests across Canada. Check out Michelle Saunders’s Encyclopedia of Labrador article to learn more—including why the name “grey jay” is apparently on the way out.
Whatever you call them, the charismatic little grey jays hardly ever fail to win over a human heart. Nearly 250 years ago, even George Cartwright kept two as pets, although like many early European settlers and sojourners in Labrador, he generally tried to kill nearly every other local animal he encountered, whether by gun or by trap.
He describes the jays in his journal:
Cartwright, George. Captain Cartwright and His Labrador Journal, edited by Charles Wendell Townsend, Dana Estes, 1911. (The above image is from page 47.)
